The Organizing Pledge Project

One of the most powerful things about the Fossil Fuel Divestment Movement is how it has mobilized and trained thousands of students and young people to organize in the fight against the climate crisis.  Our targets expect us to stop organizing after graduation.  They are waiting for our leaders to graduate so our campaigns will weaken,  but we refuse to graduate out of the movement.  The state of the crisis demands that we continue organizing for climate and social justice long after we leave campus.  Through the Organizing Pledge Project, we are sharing stories about what brings us to this work, and why we are committed to organizing for the long-term.

Here’s how it works: Current students and recent alumni who have organized on campus are writing letters to their communities and fellow young organizers, pledging not to graduate out of the movement and to remain committed to organizing for the long term.  In the letters, they reflect on their stake in climate organizing, vision for the future, role in the work, and why they are making the pledge.

Why make the pledge?

It is an inspiring and uncommon choice to stay in the movement after graduating.  Sharing that story can inspire members of your community or organization–who may feel alone, stuck in a rut, afraid, or full of self-doubt—to make a similar choice; and to find, ultimately, a more rewarding outcome for their lives and their organizing.  The Organizing Pledge Project is a way to unite young organizers in their commitment to climate justice, encourage others to continue organizing beyond college, and galvanize the power of our growing movement.
